what's wrong with your microphone? it's broke. >> the mike went limp. ♪ that's what we dishin' 'bout good morning to you. happy friday. it is 4:25 in the morning. this is a live look outside. we have some rain drops as you start to stir around in other parts of the country in the northeast, a little bit busier actually massive winter storm has people across the northeast has people getting ready for potentially record high pressure breaking snow. the snowfall could reach two

neat in boston. the storm is expected later this morning. more than 2,000 flights and dozens of trains are already canceled. much more in just a few minutes. i'm sarah simmons. >> i'm wisdom martin. welcome to fox 5 morning news. so far, we are just dealing with raindrops here. >> what a way to start the weekend. quite busy out there today. >> yeah. it is not just rain drops here locally. much of the area -- let's go right to the radar. much of the area just getting raindrops. to the north and west, the pink is indicating some mix. we'll get sleet and freezing rain and snow and snow further west out towards culpeper and leesburg pushing out winchester, we are getting reports of just snowflakes. the yellow you see down towards dale city, that is likely some sleet starting to break out. the bottom line is things will be a little touch and go here locally not next couple of hours as we continue to deal

with this wintry mix. because of that, the national weather service has extended the winter weather advisory to include closer-in counties to washington, montgomery county now under a winter weather advisory. howard county in maryland, loudoun county in virginia under a winter weather advisory until 10:00 this morning. i'll show you that map coming up. bottom line, we'll be dealing with this wintry mix and rain for the morning hours. winds will start to pick up as the storm cranks up off the coast. later tonight, we could see a few flurries around here in parts of maryland, particularly northeast maryland could get a little wraparound snow. we could be talking about a couple of inches of accumulation later on. back to you. >> thank you. that massive winter storm is topping the news today and if you are planning to fly to the northeast, chances are your flight has been canceled. airports have had snow plows ready to go in hopes of

negotiations remain fluid and could fall apart. in new york, mary ann rafferty, fox news. >> we still have more ahead, weather, traffic and all of your top stories. >> fox 5 morning news at 4:30 starts now. starts now. good morning. it is friday, february 8th. taking a live lock over washington, d.c. now. going to be a little messy out there this morning. a little messy because i would say north of here it is going to be much messier than when we are dealing with here. good morning, everyone. i'm sarah simmons. >> i'm wisdom martin. welcome to fox 5 morning news. let's talk about the mess we're dealing with and the mess they're dealing with further up the east coast. >> a lot going o locally here, the effects will be a wet, rainy commute for most of us here locally. north and west, dealing with a few more issues. got a slushy, sleet-snow mix currently across the region. the effects won't be nearly what they are to the north

where we have blizzard warnings flying currently from new york city to boston. 4 here in washington. 33 at dulles. 34 at bwi marshall. when i look more carefully at the numbers, parts of the area, particularly north and west of town have hit 32 degrees or colder. you may be dealing with a little scrapage on your windshield or there could possibly be some slippery spots out there. here is your advisory. and again, they extended it, made it a little closer to the washington metro area here. both howard county and montgomery county in maryland,

loudoun county now in virginia under that winter weather advisory until 10:00 this morning and the primary issue is the combo there of snow, sleet and freezing rain. not expecting a whole lot in the way of accumulations. there could be a slushy inch for the viewers there in one of those purple counties as this advisory will continue here for several more hours. and we are seeing that on our radar. getting some indications and reports that just off to the west, we are getting pretty good snow falling at the moment. there is your satellite-radar. storm pushing up from the south and it is just getting going. you got to look carefully on this particular satellite- radar. western side of the precipitation shield. that is your snow. that will likely cause some travel headaches. we'll generally see rain here. the wind will pick up late this afternoon and tonight. there might be a few leftover snow showers tonight and we'll be in for a windy one tomorrow. the wintry mix, the rain early this morning and eventually just becoming cloudy and breezy this afternoon with highs around 40. >> okay. 40. it is hard to believe we'll be up around 40 after all this. >> it won't feel that warm with the wind. >> thank you, today in new york. time now to check in with julie wright with our first look at what traffic there is out there on the roads this early hour of the morning. >> absolutely. it is quite the mix here on 66, you guys. i'm getting calls already

talking about that light wintry mix. some snow for those traveling inbound this morning head east from 8 #. then, as you get closer in towards marshall, it is that sleet mix we're dealing with. -- some snow for those traveling inbound this morning heading east from 81. we are hearing reports of that wintry mix out in culpeper as well. live pictures here on 66 east of manassas where we're dealing with just wet pavement continuing inbound through centreville. northbound i-95 starting to see the wintry mix as well as you hid up into dale city. but leaving woodbridge, just the wet pavement to accompany this commute headed northbound up into newington and the springfield interchange. if you didn't get a chance to do it yesterday, i'm strongly encouraging you to make sure you have plenty of wiper fluid. southbound 270, not a bad commute so far leaving i-70 headed south of 109. my trip out of gaithersburg,

just wet pavement but lanes are open as you continue southbound. no issues reported on the top stretch of the beltway between college park and bethesda. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. >> thank you. our big story this morning, that major winter storm. luckily, the d.c. region will scrape by on this one but the neighbors to the northeast will not be so lucky. >> forecasters are predicting record-breaking accumulations in some areas. people stocked occupy food and gas while snow crews got ready with their plows, sand and salt. new york city could see a foot or more but areas like boston could get more than two feet. the storm is already causing big travel headaches with more than 2,000 flights and dozens of trains canceled. officials warn people to stay off the roads. >> we are hearty new englanders and used to these types of storms. we want to remind everyone to use common sense. stay off the streets of our

september 11th saying the white house ignored warnings that the consulate was vulnerable to an attack. at the hearing, panetta and dempsey also revealed they supported arming rebels in syria. a direct contrast to the official position of the obama administration. funeral services will be held at arlington national cemetery today for a virginia soldier. 28-year-old sergeant aaron whitman was a native of virginia and a graduate of the citadel. he was the first u.s. combat casualty of the year. sergeant whitman was based out of fort stewart, georgia. a school delay to tell you about this morning, not that wear too surprised about some of these rolling in. loud occupy county schools are on a two-hour delay. >> coming up next, we'll show you how victims of superstorm sandy last fall are getting ready for another stormy round. but first, let's talk to tucker barnes about the latest track. >> good morning. here we go.

whammy. people there are still trying to recover from superstorm sandy make he go preparation for snowfall a lot harder. many residents say their phones are still not fixed from october storm damage and with the potential of 65-mile appear hour winds, they are hopeful that utility crews can keep the power on this time around. >> last night was the first night we actually cooked a meal in our kitchen and we're just trying to get back to normal and then this is coming. >> utilities throughout the northeast say they are ready for the storm bringing in extra crews and equipment. man, i feel bad for those people. i cannot believe this. >> still trying to recover. we know what is happening in our yard and along the upper east coast. we want told you here in this region, school information to pass along to you. loudoun county schools are on two-hour delay right now. we'll have all that information for you on our web site and

also scrolling at the bottom of your screen as the information comes in. >> a lot of information to come in here because the storm is just developing, just starting to move into the area as we speak. we are getting reports of everything from rain which will slow your commute on any given friday to wintry mix to snow. we've got it all across the area at the moment. we'll dodge the worst of this as new england being southern new england, parts of new york, long island, they will see the brunt of this. they have blizzard warnings up there. >> i had a little bit of what was trying to change to ice and snow. it was like sticking just hanging on the wind shield. it was just right there on the edge. >> we'll continue with that for the next couple of hours. let's get right to the radar. washington and points just to the north and west, we're getting that wintry mix. that is the pink you see. that is a combination of some snow, some sleet, seen some freezing rain right in here just to the west. here is the beltway right here. you can see that pink again

indicating the wintry mix. the yellow you see, that is some sleet. had some facebook viewers write it telling us they are getting some sleet. out towards front royal, winchester, getting some reports of light snow falling for you. it is out here to the north and west where we expect the worst of the withinner weather problems here over the next couple of hours. this wintry mix likely to continue for the next several hours. for the rest of us, along the immediate 59 core do, you will probably encounter a bit of a wintry mix here early. otherwise, it will be just some rain, a good steady rain but any time it rains for a morning commute, that does not make for pleasant travel conditions. we are likely to be dealing with this for much of the day as this major storm cranks up. here is the big picture. we've been talking about the one-two combination as we switch maps. you will see to the south and east, we have a developing area of low pressure. this will become the big coastal low that will give us the blizzard conditions to the north and then off to the north

and west, a secondary area of low pressure, a little clipper system. it is called phasing when these storms come together here. new york to boston, blizzard conditions expected and again, some very heavy snow, anywhere between about a foot in new york to two feet plus as you get up into the boston area. if you are traveling in that direction, you might want to make alternative plans later this afternoon and tonight as it will be absolutely terrible. all of connecticut, rhode island, eastern massachusetts under that blizzard advisory. for us, it is a winter weather advisory for counties that are just off to the north and west and again, winter weather advisory until 10:00 this morning. we could see up to an inch, maybe 2 inches in some spots of a wintry slush out there early this morning. here are your temperatures. 34 in washington. 34 in left hand arrestedtown. we are below freezing here northwest or at freezing. 32 in gaithersburg. 32 in frederick. there could be slippery spots

north and west. 42 today. wintry mix transitioning gradually to rain. not a great-looking day. 28 tonight. light rain transitioning back to snow for parts of the area, particularly northern maryland as you get up towards columbia, baltimore. becoming windy. check out your winds north and west gusting to 40 later tonight. it will be a windy day tomorrow with highs only in the upper 30s. there is the rest of your system. we are still looking at 50s early next week but not quite as warm. the reason why, we'll have snowpack in the mid-atlantic and across new england. that is weather. let's do traffic and get the latest from julie wright. >> good morning. i'm getting the same tweets that you are getting off of facebook as far as the wasn'tery mix we're dealing with. definitely a different ride for you folks because some parts of the area are finding snow- covered routes because the snow is coming down and then it turns to sleet and then here east of manassas, mainly just wet pavement. nothing to take for granted. watch your speeds out here on

the roads. the same for those traveling inbound off of 95 leaving stafford headed north of 610 and heading up towards dumfries, a wintry mick there. coming down. just wet pavement here north of woodbridge continuing across the occoquan headed out towards newington. allow extra time especially on the bridges, ramps and overpasses, they freeze before anything. so far, so good, this trip south on 207 leaving i-70. no issues reported continuing out towards clarkburg. both 95, 295 at this point still quiet. fairfax county police say the serial fondler has struck again and they have a new sketch they want you to see too. this is who they believe they are looking for. there have been 18 incidents reported in and around springfield, all of which have the same suspect description and the same m. o.. the man comes from behind and gropes women and then runs off.

a growing controversy surrounds a legendary d.c. team. there is a renewed push for the washington redskins to change their name. the issue was front and center yesterday in a symposium at the smithsonian's national museum of the american indian. >> fox 5's maureen umeh has more. >> hate hoare and honor. washington's football team prosecuted by a panel of speakers at a day-long forum. >> when we get to that place where we start chastising our friends, relatives and neighbors for using that word, making it unacceptable, that is when things will change. >> reporter: the discussion on racist stereotypes in american sports drawing a diverse crowd. >> it is personal to us. and knowing that is a big del,
